My Macbook Pro has been having some odd problems with the DVD writer for a few weeks now. I use Toast primarily for recording DVD-R and CD-R. Although the machine would read any media quite happily, I was having increasing problems with writing to CD-R and DVD-R. Out of a cake of 100 CD-R, I'd perhaps get a successful write with about 60, gradually decreasing over time to 20 or so. Not good. Googling suggested a dead drive. Toast would give an error of "Sense Key=Medium Error 0x73, 0x03". Trying to record the disc from Finder would give me an error of "The device failed to calibrate the laser power for this media". For reference, this is the device information: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E: Firmware Revision: ZA0E What concerned me was after the drive failed to write to a disc, the cache line would change to: Cache: 0kb After trying the various fixes listed on forums (including Apple's support site) I only had one solution left - a lens cleaner. I've always been somewhat dubious about these things as they seem a little bit snake oil to me. Colour me surprised that it seems to have fixed it. Re: Matshita DVD-R UJ-857E problems - dirty laser?
hey could you email me a link to where you got the lens cleaner? my MBP and same drive barely burns ANYTHING now... trojanlimit@gmail.com

I've been getting the same error "Sense Key=Medium Error 0x73, 0x03" and searching for the error code hasn't helped at all. I decided to search for the exact model number of my SuperDrive "Matshita DVD-R UJ-857E"... and your post was the first. ...Lens cleaner fixed it :) Thanks!

Did you apply the 2.1 firmware update and then it died? Google a bit more. if they have not fixed your drive, even if you are past a year, may want to ask your state dept. of consumer affairs - are NOT the only one..

Same problem here! Very frustrating! Can you post the name of the lens cleaner you used (to keep 100s of others from asking you to e-mail it) or send the name to me at ludicrous_larry@mac.com

After numerous comments asking where I got the lens cleaner: I just picked up a cheap one off eBay - actually the cheapest I could find. The seller hasn't got any on, and the item has been removed - eBay remove items after 90 days. The seller was: smronline1 It cost £0.69 + postage (£2.68 total) It was advertised as: DVD VCD CD LENS CLEANER Cheers :)

Hey Gary. I assume you used one of those cleaning discs right? With a little brush on it? Won't they get stuck in the MBP drive? I mean, regular CD's or DVD's barely fit through the crack.

Hey Joaquim, Yeah, that's the one. The brushes are fairly low profile, but I guess you're right, it's something that could happen. There's a fair bit of clearance there, though, but it's perhaps something worth checking. The brushes on the one I've got are probably not even 1mm further off the disc. Cheers, Gary

I just used a cd lens cleaner by Allsop and it worked a treat. They're clearly not very robust machines but they clean up good!

I had the same problem (weird write error when writing to a DVD+R), and found this post from googling. What a great tip! I used Philips "Laser lens cleaner" (from eBay), a brushed disc lens cleaner. After, I was able to write just fine.
